Shady Grove Farm is 100 acres of woods, hayfields, pastures and gardens in Southern Northern Kentucky. Besides me (Nancy – Grower, Goatherd) and my daughter (Jess – Chef, Kayaker, Woodcutter) there are 4 horses, 12 goats, 15 of their kids so far, 2 dogs and about 5 cats (mostly barn).

Very much enjoyed your comments concerning Friedman’s “The Startup of You.” Having worked in Silicon Valley, I can say that you speak complete sense… and not just about social media start-ups. What a great view of life – and an overall approach to living!

Thanks for the thoughts. And keep reading: there are a lot of alternatives to the cubicle.

Nancy,
A little off-topic, perhaps, but I just read your comment to the ridiculous Friedman column (Start-Up…). It is the knowledge there are people like you, people who I know exist only through such comments to such columns, that keeps me from falling into absolute despair over the incredible and increasing insanity that is our country.
A corporate-run political system, a complicit media (save for a relative few and oft-ignored blogger/journalists), an ignorant public…and no hope for change in the near future, at least…what is one to do…
Anyway, again, thanks for the spot-on and hilarious (if it weren’t all so true) comment. Made my morning. keep writing.

Patty, I guess that makes this what Wesley Jackson would call “an island of virtue,” not quite approvingly. But I keep in mind Saki’s (from the novella, “When William Came”) “It is one thing to face music, quite another to dance to it.” We can alway refuse to be caught up in the seductions of consumerism.

Here simply to say that I enjoyed your comment to Friedland’s article. Well said. I have two brothers who run companies in Silicon Valley (neither social media, though), and both of them would agree with you. :-D Indeed, you and my older brother seem like kindred spirits. Keep writing.

Nancy,
Your response to NYT article was right on.
It never ceases to amaze me that people think that money will solve all problems.
I didn’t see the one about the raised onion beds. Now that would be a sight and a site! And then that wouldn’t be sufficient; the beds would have to be adjustable.
